The City of Roswell is moving forward with plans to replace aging playgrounds at four city parks following unanimous approval by Mayor and Council on Oct. 13, 2026.

Council voted to approve a $1,468,683.14 contract with Dominica Recreation Products for playground replacements at East Roswell Park, Groveway Community Park, Roswell Area Park and Sloan Street Park. The project has a total authorization of $1,542,117 and will be funded through the City’s 2022 Parks Bond Program.

The improvements will provide updated playground equipment, enhanced accessibility and more inclusive recreational opportunities for children and families throughout Roswell. City staff are targeting completion of all four playgrounds by June 1, 2027.

    Replacing Aging Playgrounds

Roswell maintains 15 playgrounds throughout its park system. The four playgrounds selected for replacement are among the City’s oldest, with installations dating back more than 15 years.

The playground at Sloan Street Park was installed in 2007, followed by Roswell Area Park in 2008, East Roswell Park in 2009 and Groveway Community Park in 2010.

The Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department has certified playground safety inspectors (CSPI) on staff who conduct weekly visual inspections and more detailed monthly inspections of playgrounds throughout the park system.

These routine inspections and maintenance efforts have helped extend the useful life of Roswell’s playgrounds. However, as equipment ages, maintenance needs increase, replacement parts and fixtures become more frequently necessary, and safety concerns can grow.

Based on these factors, the four parks were identified as the next priorities for playground replacement.

The replacements support the City’s 2022 Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs 5-Year Master Plan, which identified playground revitalization and replacement as a community priority based on resident feedback.

The new playgrounds will incorporate age-appropriate equipment, adaptive and inclusive play elements, and improvements designed to enhance accessibility, durability and safety.

    What’s Included in the Improvements?

The project includes the complete replacement of existing playground equipment and surfacing at all four locations.

Work will include demolition and removal of existing playground structures, site preparation, installation of new commercial-grade equipment and surfacing, and other necessary site improvements. No trees are scheduled for removal as part of the playground replacement project.

The playgrounds will be designed to meet applicable Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, ASTM International safety standards and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines.

The project will also include required inspections and closeout documentation, including an independent inspection by a certified playground safety inspector (CPSI) prior to final acceptance.

    Investing in Roswell’s Parks

To maximize available funding and streamline the project, the City combined all four playground replacements into a single competitive request for proposal (RFP) process.

This approach is intended to create efficiencies in design, purchasing and construction while promoting consistent standards for quality, safety, accessibility and long-term maintenance throughout the City’s park system.

The project was recommended for consideration by the Committees of Council on Sept. 29, 2026, before receiving unanimous approval from Mayor and Council on Oct. 13.

Construction Timeline and What Residents Can Expect

Construction will require removal of the existing playgrounds and installation of new equipment and surfacing. No trees are scheduled for removal as part of the project, and the City intends to minimize disruptions to park visitors while work is underway.

Specific construction start dates, temporary playground closures and anticipated reopening schedules have not yet been announced. Additional information will be shared as project schedules are finalized.

Once completed, the four playgrounds will provide refreshed recreational spaces designed to better serve Roswell’s children and families for years to come.
