Juneteenth celebrates the effective termination of slavery in the United States. It marks the arrival of federal troops in Galveston, Texas in 1865, seizing control of the state and ensuring the liberation of all enslaved individuals. Originally observed in Texas on June 19, 1866, Juneteenth commemorates the day African Americans first learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, over two years after its issuance. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, honoring the end of slavery and acknowledging the cultural and societal contributions of African Americans.
