The City of Roswell hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate improvements to the Big Creek Greenway in Big Creek Park on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The celebration marked the completion of yet another transformative project funded by Roswell’s Bond Program, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters in November 2022.
The City of Roswell’s Big Creek Park is an integral part of the broader Big Creek Greenway, a 26-mile series of connected paths and boardwalks that meander along Big Creek, extending from Roswell, north to Alpharetta, and eventually extending into Forsyth County. The Roswell segment of the Greenway, which covers approximately 2.3 miles, was opened in 2005.
During the ensuing years, the Big Creek floodplain has increased and frequent flooding incidents have resulted in the deterioration of the elevated boardwalk section of the Greenway (accounting for approx. 0.37 miles or 1,950 linear feet), leading to trail closures and safety concerns.
The Big Creek Greenway Boardwalk Improvement Project began in January 2024 with the goal of replacing and reinforcing the original, damaged sections of the boardwalk. This project was completed in two phases. Phase I, the multi-use portion of the boardwalk where both pedestrians and bikes are permitted, was opened to the public in late March—about a month ahead of schedule. Phase 2, the pedestrian-only section of the boardwalk, was completed in September.
Old, wooden deck boards were removed and replaced with high-performance composite decking. Crews also installed special materials to reinforce the new boardwalk, enhancing durability for years to come.
The total cost for this project is approximately $1.4 million, funded by the City of Roswell’s Bond Program.
