Pickleball continues to be one of Roswell’s fastest-growing sports and Roswell is serving up more opportunities to play. To meet community demand and expand access to recreation, the City of Roswell is moving forward with a plan to build six new outdoor pickleball courts at Crabapple Center.

At the October 27, 2025, Regular Meeting, Roswell Council approved a $172,500 contract authorization with Signature Tennis Courts, with a total project budget of $207,000. The contract is expected to be signed in November 2025, with construction underway and completion anticipated by Spring 2026.

This project is part of Phase 2 of the Crabapple Center redevelopment, a multi-phase, bond-funded initiative through the 2022 Recreation & Parks Bond Program, ensuring no impact to the City’s General Fund.

“Crabapple Center represents the future of how we’re investing in Roswell’s parks,” said Mayor Kurt Wilson. “It aligns with our top priority of exceptional infrastructure execution—ensuring every project we deliver meets the highest standards of quality, sustainability, and service to our residents.”

Why This Project Matters

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country—and in Roswell, that popularity has outpaced available space. The City’s four outdoor courts at Grimes Bridge Park are regularly booked to capacity, leaving many players waiting for open court time.

“Pickleball has exploded in popularity, and our residents have been asking for more courts,” said Steven Malone, Director of Recreation, Parks, Historic, and Cultural Affairs Department. “This project doubles Roswell’s outdoor pickleball capacity and allows us to meet that demand while revitalizing an aging space.”

The two existing tennis courts at Crabapple Center had reached the end of their useful life, with severe surface deterioration and sub-base failure. After reviewing site conditions and consulting with recreation experts, City staff determined that converting the courts to pickleball represented the highest and best use for the property—aligning with community demand, sustainability goals, and the City’s strategic facility plan.

Project Details

The Crabapple Center Pickleball Courts Project will transform two aging tennis courts—originally built for school use—into six new regulation pickleball courts designed for durability, accessibility, and long-term performance.

  • Demolition and full rebuild of two aging tennis courts.
  • Construction of six regulation pickleball courts on the same footprint.
  • Upgraded fencing with sound-reducing materials and individual court divisions.
  • Reinforced curbing and improved drainage for longevity and performance.
  • Design consultation with the USA Pickleball Ambassador for Georgia to ensure best practices and play quality.

These courts will not include lighting and will be open for play from sunrise to sunset, providing a daytime recreation space for residents of all ages and skill levels.

Part of a Larger Vision

The new six (6) pickleball courts are one piece of the City’s phased plan to modernize and repurpose the Crabapple Center property, transforming it into a vibrant hub for recreation, culture, and community life.

  • Phase 1 (completed): Purchasing the property, preparing the facility for use, and activating spaces for basketball, summer camps, and gymnastics. This phase is complete.
  • Phase 2 (currently active): Building new outdoor pickleball courts, replacing the roof, and converting interior spaces into studios and performance areas.
  • Phase 3 (future phase): Improving site access to Roswell Area Park, opening the grounds, and expanding programming and studio space at the PAC.
