The City of Roswell and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will present an overview of the Historic Gateway project at an upcoming open house. The Historic Gateway project focuses on the stretch of SR9/South Atlanta Street that runs between SR 120 (Marietta Highway) and the bridge over the Chattahoochee River. The City and GDOT have been working for several years to fix dangerous conditions on this road, which is among the top corridors for crashes in the Atlanta region.

The in-person open house will be held Oct. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 675 Riverside Road. There will be no formal presentation; however, staff will be on hand to provide an update and answer any questions about the project.

For those who may not be able to attend the in-person meeting, a virtual question-and-answer session will take place on Oct. 10, from 5-7 p.m. Visit www.RoswellGov.com/Gateway on the day of the event for the meeting link.

GDOT will accept public comments on the project through their website until Oct. 22.

“Council and I have been working with GDOT over the past couple of years to tweak the design of this project, and we have been able to improve it for our residents,” said Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson. “The improvements to this section of Atlanta Street will monumentally improve safety for drivers and create a multi-use trail down to the river for pedestrians. It’s a transformative project for one of the gateways into our City.”

Currently, the road has three lanes, and the center “reversible” lane alternates between northbound and southbound throughout the day. This leads to regular crashes, injuries, and traffic backups.

The changes to the road will improve traffic flow and reduce the frequency and severity of crashes while also improving pedestrian connectivity. The project will remove the reversible lane and create a four-lane divided highway between the Roswell Town Square and the Chattahoochee River. The project will feature a series of roundabouts at intersections to slow and control traffic efficiently.
