The $6.5 million bond-funded project will replace the roof, add studio spaces, and create a black box performance space by Spring 2026.

In February 2025, the City of Roswell purchased Crabapple Middle School for $6.5 million as a part of the Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs bond referendum. The 20-acre property, now called Crabapple Center, is located at 10700 Crabapple Road, directly beside Roswell Area Park.

    Current Plans and Program Growth

Since acquiring the site, the City has been assessing opportunities for both the building and the surrounding Crabapple Center property.

A few minutes away at Roswell Area Park, the Physical Activity Center (PAC) and the Bill Johnson Community Activity Building (BJCAB) are being renovated and expanded to meet increasing demand for Roswell’s gymnastics programming.

Meanwhile, Roswell’s Performing Arts programs have steadily grown, reaching capacity at their current PAC location. To support this growth the City plans to convert up to seven classrooms into studio spaces and explore transforming the cafeteria into a small black box performance space. These changes will allow Performing Arts programming to expand in a dedicated space, while freeing the PAC to support the growing gymnastics program.

    Next Steps

The first phase of work focuses on core infrastructure repairs, beginning with replacing a large portion of the severely damaged roof at Crabapple Center. After the roof is replaced, reconstruction interior renovations will begin to convert classrooms into studios and update other areas of the building.

If contract authorizations and budget allocations are approved, renovations are targeted for completion in early Spring 2026. At that time, the City plans to relocate Performing Arts programs from the PAC to Crabapple Center, which will enable gymnastics programming to expand throughout the PAC. In parallel, the City is retrofitting the small gymnasium at the BJCAB to further increase gymnastics capacity.

Following the completion of these initial projects, City staff will work with the Mayor and Council to develop a broader, long-range facility plan for the site.
